Our Story

I AM PHOENIX

The Phoenix of the Detroit Fire Department was founded after the riots of 1967. The mission of the organization centers on assisting minorities with entering and advancing in the fire service and on acting as a liaison between the fire department and the community we serve.

The organization is comprised of a diverse minority group of active and retired Detroit Firefighters. We collaborate to achieve a greater collective impact for our members and the community we serve and protect.

After being vacant for nearly twelve years, the organization officially purchased the Historic Engine 11 property in 2002 to carry out the organization’s purpose. The building was built in 1883 and is located at 2733 Gratiot at the corner of Grandy on the city’s east side.

Engine 11 serves as our home office, meeting place, training center, and is available for members to rent for private events. The building is an architectural marvel and is listed on the Local, State, and National Historic Preservation registries.
